code4kids was officially founded on October 5, 2024, as a transformative initiative aimed at bridging the gap in computational education for young learners, with a strong focus on unplugged learning methodologies. The was conceptualized by Prof. Emmanuel A. Ramirez, a visionary Computer Science professor and the university’s Coordinator for Community Extension. His passion for accessible and impactful education brought Code4Kids to life, addressing the growing demand for foundational computing education delivered through creative, technology-free methods.
The program owes much of its success to the collaborative efforts of the founding members, a dedicated group of educators who share a commitment to empowering youth. The team includes Prof. Marizkays Jamison, Prof. Gaudencio Jeffrey Romano, Prof. Armida Salazar, Prof. Jensen Santillan, Prof. Jesfer Dela Cruz, and Prof. Roger Primo. Their expertise and enthusiasm have been instrumental in shaping the curriculum and ensuring its effective implementation. Additionally, the leadership and guidance of Prof. Susan Caluya, the Program Chairperson of Computer Science at National University, have provided a strong foundation for Code4Kids’ development and sustainability.
The program was first piloted in Barangay Loyola Heights, Quezon City, where it introduced young learners to essential computational concepts such as binary systems, patterns, algorithms, data representation, error detection, and logic gates. Delivered through unplugged learning techniques, the curriculum relies on hands-on activities, engaging games, and interactive exercises, eliminating the need for computers while fostering curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking.
Code4Kids represents more than an educational program; it is a movement to make computational thinking and problem-solving accessible to all children, regardless of their access to technology. By prioritizing unplugged learning, the program ensures inclusivity and adaptability, empowering children to develop foundational skills in fun and meaningful ways.
